Everybody has a passion, so they say. For the longest time, I was struggling to figure out what mine was.
Sure, I always thought I had it figured out from time to time, but nothing really stuck with me, at least that I noticed anyway. And while it never really stressed me out or depressed me, it did bother me from time to time.
So far, this school year has been great. Sure, there have been some parts that have sucked, but overall it has been one of my favorite school years yet, and I finally found out why; I found my passion.
People are my passion.
Sounds odd, but for real, people are my passion (I guess that is why I’m in journalism.) And now that I’ve found it, I realize it has always been there.
Not that I remember, but I was the most talkative little boy in the world according to my parents. “Never met a stranger”, they would say. While I would not go that far, I do see what they are saying.
Part of this realization came through reporting. This is my first semester to report, and while I’m not so happy with my writing ability, I have found that reporting just comes naturally to me. Instead of looking at an interview like a task or a chore, I just see it as another conversation.
Sure, some are a bit bland and the topic I’m assigned is pretty boring, but I have found that I always enjoy talking to the people I interview.
This past Monday, I interviewed a graduate student who practices Wicca. While the religion is definitely not for me, I still found it interesting to hear her perspective on the world and her views on different things.
A few weeks ago, I was able to speak with Gen. Larita Aragon, the first female general of Oklahoma. While the interview kind of made me feel like I was a total waste of space after hearing about all she has accomplished, I learned a lot and it gave me hope about my future and what I could accomplish.
I enjoy getting to know these people and how they think. I have also found through my friends that I also love just caring and being there for people. Everyone else is just so interesting and special to me, and everybody has knowledge to offer, whether they are younger, older, way older, male, female, black, white, rich or homeless.
While this all may sound a bit emo or whatever, I’m glad I’ve finally found my passion. I look forward to every new day and try to meet at least one new person every day. You should try it sometime. Who knows, maybe you’ll find your passion in life as well.
