Life as a Daily reporter

Troy Weatherford/The Oklahoma Daily Sometimes, things come crumbling down. For me, it hasn’t been anything major, but I have had some frustrations that are making my life harder. Foremost, I’m out of money. I’m becoming very creative with ramen noodles. My alcohol supply is dangerously low. My primary form of ...

Thinking fast, not so easy

Natasha Goodell discusses her time fasting for Ramadan Natasha Goodell/The Oklahoma Daily Children all over the world are starving; I realized a lot of my selfishness Tuesday as I took part in Think Fast, an event sponsored by the Muslim Student Association in which they encouraged everyone to take part ...

What a start to the school year...

Natasha Goodell/The Oklahoma Daily My name is Natasha Goodell and I am a journalism junior from Sand Springs, Okla. I worked for the Daily last year for a semester as an intern and have come back this semester as a reporter for the multicultural beat. I love learning about different ...

Not much of a science person, but...

Jared Rader/The Oklahoma Daily I was happy to be put on the Daily staff this semester, but I was a bit surprised at the beat I was assigned. I am the health sciences and research reporter. During the previous spring semester, I had gotten lucky with two research stories that ...

Let's eat broccoli together

Have you ever noticed that once someone makes up their mind about something, it is very hard for them to change their minds about it?

Immigration Reform

About four months ago I worked on story for a reporting class that dealt with immigration reform, and this weekend I found myself thrown back into the complexities of the immigration issue.

The Daily's redesign

What do you think of The Daily's print redesign?

A busy, busy week

As I look back on last week, I am in awe of all the things I’ve covered. I believe I did about 5 stories last week along with a brief or something like that, and this week I have 4 stories. Plus, I’m working on 2 other side projects for potential future stories.

Pageants are much more than 'beauty'

Some of the most interesting aspects of this job are the places it takes me. A few that stick out are a trip to Norman Pioneer Library to meet civil rights activist Clara Luper; a late night visit to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City to talk with Nikki Peterson, who commutes multiple times a week between the city and Tulsa to be with her hospitalized husband and her young daughter; and most recently, a walk across campus to Meacham Auditorium in the Union to report on the Miss Hispanic OU pageant.

People are my passion

Everybody has a passion, so they say. For the longest time, I was struggling to figure out what mine was.

OU's YouTube and REEL students

One of the stories I was working on this week was the OU’s You Tube Channel.

It's the characters that make the stories

I’m going to tell you a little secret. Sometimes when you work on a story, you have to interview some boring people and it is up to you to make the story interesting to everyone else.

An Inside Look at Campus' Newest Addition

One of the stories that I am working on right now is the new Jim Thorpe Multicultural Center that we are getting on campus.

Please take me seriously

It’s really frustrating to me when people don’t return my phone calls, but then they’ll text me right away if I shoot them a message. I get equally frustrated when an adult says they don’t have the time to talk to me on the phone, but would prefer if I asked some questions through an e-mail.

Just a concern ...

While Friday and Saturday tend to be the slowest days of the week in the newsroom (unless some idiot decides to attack a professor), I know that on Sunday I will have to spend a ton of time compiling all the police reports.

Flattering feedback

I must say, I’ve been quite flattered by the amount of attention my stories have received this week. Four of my stories appeared in The Daily this week, and between two of them, readers left 35 comments on OUDaily.com.

The first encounter

I had lunch with senior vice president and provost Nancy Mergler Tuesday afternoon. We were set to meet up at the university club at 1 p.m.

And that's what it's all about...

Last Saturday, Ashley Body covered a Habitat for Humanity story where OU students had raised money for a very deserving family. Joseph Johnson is a single parent and his son, JoJo, is 6 , he was born with down syndrome and was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of four.

You just have to be at the right place at the right time...

To say this week was crazy is definitely an understatement. Well, you know the story about Michael Childers. If not, I’ll start from the beginning.

Friday the 13th ... A coincidence?

It’s 3:45 and Clark Foy is at Campus Lodge signing for an apartment for the summer. Saved some money, too. Great day so far, now but now he's running late to the newsroom for a mandatory workshop at 3:30. Enter the Michael Childers story.
