Lady Gaga is insane and we all know that. "But she's an artist, Mark!" Whatever, I don't care. Would it be all right for me to walk around, poop in hand, eating away, but I claimed I was an artist? No. No it would not.

But whatever, she does what she wants and people love her for it. Yay for her. She can look like a complete moron and people will cry and scream and beg to touch her. That's a fantastic power. She can go outside dressed in an inverse-fur coat, blood dripping everywhere, and people would bow to her. Or she could walk around, poop in hand, eating away.

When you think about it, artists and insane can be interchangeable.

More importantly is her artists status though, is the question on whether she is hot or not. I don't know. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. But you know who is hot? Katy Perry.

Katy Perry is not insane, at least not in the sense of putting trapezes on her head and singing about disco sticks. And she isn't really controversial, except when singing about kissing girls, which I don't understand because we've all kissed girls.

The reason I am talking about these two is because recently, Katy Perry criticized Lady Gaga over her new music video for the song, "Alejandro." You can watch the video here but I probably wouldn't do it at work, at church, or when eating.

The video contains lots of religious imagery, homoerotic undertones, and the military. And Katy Perry is not happy about it. She said on her Twitter "using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke." (Hey, I just quoted Twitter! I'm so hip!) Clearly, Perry's strict religious upbringing caused her to have some negative reactions to Lady Gaga's video.

Actually, I don't know if she had any religious upbringing. It doesn't matter. What matters is that Katy Perry is kind of a hypocrite. She sings about kissing girls, partying in Vegas, making sex with dudes, and all sorts of other debaucheries. It's not like she is completely innocent. So it's odd to see someone in the same boat chastising another ship mate.

Just another Sunday at church!

But I do understand Perry's comments. It is an easy road. Gaga simply took controversial issues, mashed them together, and became the talk of the internet and news. It's too easy. She's not really adding anything to the discussion either. Anyone can be controversial. All you have to do is think of something in the news and say the opposite of what is correct. Or, take the issue and say something completely crazy. It's not hard, and I think that was Perry's point.

Unfortunately, Perry isn't in a position to chastise someone on moral or religious grounds. While I agree with what she said, she should have worded it differently. It would have worked had she said something like "Oh come on, using the military, homosexuals, and the Catholic church to stir up controversy is ridiculously lazy." (Except, that isn't 140 characters.)

This situation reminds of a Daily incident a few months back where someone drew a satirical (I'm using that term very loosely) cartoon about sororities and fraternities. It gained a lot of attention because of its negative portrayal of Greek members. And it made me mad.

Not because what it said, but because it was ridiculously lazy and simple-minded. We've heard it all before. The illustrator was being a simpleton, using the Greek community, their ability to create hatred from those not involved, the ability for the Greek community to respond to anything written about them, and lazy comments to get a rise out of people. I read that cartoon and was just amazed how someone can think they were being edgy, yet so blind to the fact that they were making such a juvenile effort to say something about society.

Lady Gaga's video is lazy. She wanted attention and now she is getting it. So what have we learned? Creating pointless controversy in the laziest ways possible sells! Maybe to get more readers of this blog, I should take a dump in a dead oil-covered bird while eating pieces of the American flag and singing "Jesus Loves the Little Children."

And you can't be mad at me, because I am an artist.
