Road Trip (2000)

This piece of comedic gold directed by Todd Phillips is about exactly what the title says, a road trip. A campus tour guide named Barry Manilow (Tom Green, “The Tom Green Show”) - this joke is probably one of my favorites to quote – tells the story of his friends who went on an amazing journey from Ithica College in New York to the University of Austin in Texas (they changed the name for legal reasons even though it is clearly the University of Texas). They go to the fake UT in pursuit of a video the main character Josh Parker (Breckin Meyer) accidentally sent to his girlfriend. The video contained Josh having sex with a girl, Beth, who has been trying to hook up with him all semester. Obviously, the only solution was to drive thousands of miles to intercept the video.

Along the way the group goes through a lot – their car exploded, they are accused of being a part of the KKK, they steal a bus from a blind chick and Barry gets attacked by a giant snake – and the audience learns many life lessons about what not to do to a waiter at a diner and what is and is not considered cheating. My advice, just keep the peanut butter to yourself and don’t send your French to ast back because it has powdered sugar on it.

“Road Trip” is one of my favorite movies, and I recommend anyone who wants to think about getting away from all of the stresses that college has to offer.

“What else am I supposed to do, stay here and learn?”

Dazed and Confused (1993)

This is the ultimate start-of-summer movie. It involves hazing of incoming freshmen, partying, drinking, defiance and having a good time.

The movie follows a group of high school kids, ranging from seniors to freshmen, and their activities on their last day of school leading into the summer of 1976.

For those who don’t know, this is the movie that got actor Matthew McConaughey on the map with his performance as David Wooderson. Wooderson is the local older kind of creepy, kind of cool guy who hangs out with the high schoolers even though he graduated a few years earlier. You might know him more for this line, though, “that’s what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.”

The cult classic has a great cast and story, and it is a must see for anyone who has already gone through high school or is one of those unlucky few who are about to be take the title of “freshman.”
