This world is full of surprises. Whether we like it or not surprises will be thrusted into our faces. Sometimes they’re good. Sometimes they’re bad. For me, this week has been full of surprises. I was surprised that my laptop broke down on me, and I’m still in shock of what happened in last week’s “LOST.” Today I want to share a couple recent surprising performances in movies, television or whatever medium.

Neil Patrick Harris in “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”

Neil Patrick Harris

I heard about this musical piece about a month before it was released in 2008, and I knew NPH would be the star. So, at the time I Youtube-ed some of his work, and stumbled upon some videos of his performance in a live concert of “Sweeney Todd.” Even though he played the little kid and had to use a voice that sounded more like a child’s voice, he could sing.

Since he used a kid’s voice and I didn’t research further into his Broadway and singing career I didn’t know how good of a singer he really was until the other night when I got around to watching “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” on Hulu.

Granted that NPH is awesome in “How I Met Your Mother” and the “Harold and Kumar” movies, but his singing and acting in “Dr. Horrible’s” blew me away. His voice is great. He can sing to just about any kind of rhythm while portraying the range of emotions his character goes through during the 50-minute long movie.

The movie itself is about a guy named Billy who is a low-time villain, Dr. Horrible, who tries really hard but gets thwarted in his plans by Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion). He has a crush on a girl from the local cleaners who he accidently causes to start a relationship with Captain Hammer during a heist. The duality of his situation carries over throughout the rest of the movie and grabs many of the audience’s emotions and leads to NPH greatness.

Any movie with NPH, Nathan Fillion and the tagline “He has a Ph.D. in horribleness” is worth anyone’s time and attention.

Overall NPH’s performance in “Dr. Horrible’s” is LEGEN-sorry to the lactose intolerant-DARY!

Bobb’e J. Thompson

I’m not going to attach a specific movie with this kid because I’ve only seen him in one movie, “Role Models,” and he appeared in a recent episode of “30 Rock.” Robinson, who turned 13 in February, is probably the most foul-mouthed, talented young actor I’ve seen since Chris Barnes’s portrayal of Tanner Boyle in the original “Bad News Bears.”

I know the script called for Robinson to drop as many F-Bombs as he did, but for someone who was not a teenager during filming the movie to be using the word so readily, fluently and with as much conviction as he di d is astounding, in a good way.

A few weeks ago he was in an episode of “30 Rock” where he plays Tracy Jordan’s (Tracy Morgan) son and he brought as much intensity and hilarity as he did in “Role Models.” Honestly if I was to be in that scene and had to be “yelled” at like Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) was I would be both surprised and mortified at the whole situation.

This kid can act. Period. I can see him having a big future ahead of him in Hollywood, but he could also become victim of typecasting. I just hope that doesn’t happen because he could do just about anything he wants in he acting world if he gets the chance.
