OU track and field to run against Arkansas' top-ranked teams

Oklahoma’s track and field teams will travel to Fayetteville this weekend for the Razorback Invitational. The Sooners will face off against a bevy of highly ranked teams, including host school Arkansas’ top-ranked men’s and third-ranked women’s teams.

“It’s an honor [to go up against those teams], but I don’t worry about other people,” senior shot putter Tia Brooks said. “I just want to do my best. The goal is to PR at every meet, and that’s what I’m hoping for.”

Thanks to a successful opening weekend, both OU’s men’s and women’s teams made significant moves in the polls. The women moved up from 21st to 19th, and the men made the biggest jump of any team, advancing from 23rd to 13th.

After sending its top distance runners to the Gladstein Invitational last weekend – where senior George Alex won the mile with a 4:03.35 – the men’s team will be at full strength in Arkansas for the first time this season.

This will also be the debut of former Montana State miler and three-time All-American Patrick Casey, whose transfer to Oklahoma was made official Wednesday.

Casey is the top-ranked miler and second-ranked half-miler in the nation, giving the Sooners two top 10 milers – the other being sixth-ranked Maine transfer Riley Masters.

Casey joins one of the deepest groups of distance runners in the nation, rounded out by four of the top 20 5,000-meter runners in Kevin Schwab, George Alex, Kevin Williams and Bill Kogel.

In addition to fielding a stacked distance lineup and a top-20 hurdler in Malcolm Anderson on the men’s side, the women’s team boasts the top two shot putters in the nation with top-ranked Tia Brooks and second-ranked Karen Shump.

Brooks is coming off a record-setting performance at the J.D. Martin Invitational last weekend where she set an OU record for indoor shot as well as meeting the Olympic “A” standard.

“I hope to have at least a couple more Olympics under my belt, but I’m just kind of going with the flow right now,” Brooks said. “I just try to go out there and do my thing, and if that gets me the win, that gets me the win.”

The meet is scheduled to kickoff at noon Friday from Fayateville, Ark.
