I have a dream, a dream of a 4.0 grade point average, ripped abs and a Ferrari. Oh yes, I have a dream.
Though I dream of these things, I know that once there was a man who was brave enough to dream for a better future for not just himself, but the entire nation.
"I have a dream," he said, "that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Martin Luther King, Jr. certainly had a dream. With his influential prose, he rallied the oppressed and enabled them to break down the barriers of racism. Today, his work is celebrated annually, on a holiday that we usually appreciate solely for the extra day of winter break it gives us.
As this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day dwindles to a close, I decide to reevaluate my dreams.
I have a dream of a 4.0 grade point average, but what does that do to better my country?
I have a dream of ripped abs, but what does that do to help people in need?
I have a dream of driving a Ferrari, but what good does that do for mankind?
It doesn't, and thus, my shallow wishes morph into real desire to help others.
I have a dream that every student has the opportunity to attend college, regardless of financial need.
I have a dream that the hungry have a meal to eat and a place to sleep.
I have a dream that the world, along with myself, will put aside their earthly desires and reach out to mankind more often.
While it is one thing to dream these things, Martin Luther King, Jr. taught us that when we really yearn for change, we must act upon it. What will you do to make your dreams become a reality?
