Volleyball team suffers first loss during North Texas Invitational

The No. 17 OU volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday, but rebounded to win its last two games, finishing 2-1 in the North Texas Invitational.

The Sooners dropped Friday’s match to Cincinnati 3-1 (20-25, 26-24, 24-26, 18-25), and swept North Texas and Sam Houston State on Saturday.

Against Cincinnati, Oklahoma committed an unusually high number of attack errors, 30 in all, and had a season low (.153) hitting percentage. Senior Suzy Boulavsky led the offense with 15 kills, while seniors Brianne Barker and Caitlin Higgins each had a double-double.

The Sooners only had four total blocks as a team.

OU unleashed its fury Saturday morning on North Texas, sweeping the Mean Green (-8, -19, -12) in a match that lasted just one hour and 10 minutes. The Sooners hit .357 as a team with Boulavsky leading the offense with nine kills and Barker collecting another double-double.

The defense held North Texas to a -.098 hitting percentage as the Mean Green had only 23 kills against 32 attack errors.

Later on Saturday, Oklahoma swept the Bearkats of Sam Houston State (27-25, -21, -16). After a tight first set, the Sooners opened up the game and finished the match strong by hitting .370 in the final set and .278 for the match.

Boulavsky led the offense with 11 more kills, giving her 35 for the weekend, while junior Maria Fernanada led the defense with 16 kills to total 37 for the tournament.

The Sooners return home Tuesday night to host Arkansas at McCasland Field House. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
