OU home run leader Jessica Shults’ three-run bomb was enough to secure the Sooners’ 4-2 victory over Cal-Poly in the Cathedral City (Calif.) Classic on Saturday afternoon. The sophomore catcher tacked on her 10th home run of the season, scoring three runs after the Mustangs put two runs on the board in the top of the third inning.
The victory against the Mustangs ended a four-game winless drought — tied for the program's worst since 2005 — for the Sooners in the tournament.
Cal-Poly led off the game in the top of the third with a pair of singles and one fielding error by starting pitcher Allee Allen to take a two-run lead. The Mustangs' Gerhart and Westlund collected the pair of runs for Cal-Poly after Gerhart singled to lead off the inning, followed by a throwing error that allowed Westlund to reach first base. The two early base runners were plated by two separate long outs to right and left field.
Allen recorded two runs — one earned — and one strikeout before Gasso pulled her in the top of the fourth to put in sophomore Michelle Gascoigne to finish the game. The right-handed pitcher finished the game with four strikeouts.
OU bats finally responded with a lead-off single by freshman center fielder Destinee Martinez in the second half of the third inning, and she advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch.
Freshman first baseman Brittany walked to put runners at the corners before Shults delivered her home run down the right-field line.
OU tacked on one run in the bottom of the sixth from senior right fielder Haley Nix, who scored after getting hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Freshman pinch hitter Haley McGregor laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to advance Nix before a throwing error allowed Nix to score.
UCLA 3, Oklahoma 0
OU softball dropped its fourth consecutive loss in the Cathedral City (Calif.) Classic to UCLA, 3-0, on Friday night, tying the longest winless streak for the program since 2005. The Sooners (11-5) are fighting inconsistencies at the plate after the team was shut out for the second time of the tournament.
The Sooner bats finished the game with four hits by four different players while stranding nine batters on base. Only two OU base runners reached second base after the first inning.
Starting pitcher Keilani Ricketts (5-2) held the Bruins scoreless through the first three innings before the defending national champions scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. OU’s sophomore ace allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters during her second complete game of the tournament.
UCLA scored after a lead-off walk and a pair of singles gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Talee Snow was hit by a pitch and Katie Schroeder hit a single to the right side to score the Bruins' second and third runs after the team loaded the bases.
UCLA’S starting pitcher, Donna Kerr (5-0), allowed two hits and two walks in her return to the Bruins lineup after facing an ankle injury after a run-down situation at home plate last Saturday against Portland State.
The last time the Sooners had this many consecutive losses, then-No. 5 Oklahoma was dropped twice by Kansas — 5-4 and 4-1 — after losing to Tulsa, 6-2, and Baylor, 6-5, in a six-day stint. It was the second four-game losing streak for the 2005 team that finished with a 50-17 overall record and 12-6 in Big 12 action.
