Roddick's Sooners stay perfect against Oklahoma State
by   |  April 6, 2011  |

In the second round of Bedlam, it was the Cowboys — not the Sooners — who were staring down an early deficit.

The 26th-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team flipped the script, winning a tight doubles point and cruising from there to defeat the Cowboys for the second time this season, 6-1, at the Headington Family Tennis Center on Wednesday night.

"In the doubles, we kind of got away with one there," OU coach John Roddick said. "But then we came out in singles and played very well, really one through six. Even Mihov losing down there, I thought he actually played pretty well. All in all, it was a good day at the end."

Freshman Laurentiu Gavrila and sophomore Lawrence Formentera got the Sooners (12-4, 2-1 Big 12) off to a good start in doubles play, beating the Cowboys' Rifat Biktyakov and Tomas Patiño, 8-3, in No. 3 doubles.

Oklahoma State (3-10, 0-4 Big 12) evened the score in doubles play after Maniel Bains and Eric West, ranked No. 74 nationally in doubles, topped OU's 42nd-ranked doubles duo of sophomore Costin Paval and Peerakit Siributwong, 9-7, at the No. 2 position.

Senior Ionut Beleleu and freshman Tsvetan Mihov gave the Sooners the early 1-0 lead when they outlasted OSU's Aleksey Bessonov and Vlad Bondarenko in the tiebreaker game to win, 9-8, in No. 1 doubles.

From there, OU was dominant, taking five-of-six singles matches.

Paval struck first, beating the Cowboys' Bondarenko in straight sets — 6-2, 6-1 — to widen the margin to 2-0. The Romania native started the season 9-0 in singles play before hitting a slump, but he improved to 11-4 in singles matches with the win.

"I took a few hits, but I'm back on the train right now," Paval said.

Next, his doubles partner, Siributwong, beat Oklahoma State's Biktyakov with ease in a straight-sets victory, winning — 6-2, 6-1 — to make the score 3-0. The win improved the Thailand native to 4-0 at the No. 3 singles position and 9-4 overall.

Beleleu secured the win after he topped OSU's 72nd-ranked Bains in identical sets — 6-3, 6-3.

Formentera added another point for OU when he beat the Cowboys' West in a super tiebreaker — 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3).

The Sooners got their final dual point of the evening after Gavrila defeated OSU's Bessonov — 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

Oklahoma State managed to avoid the shutout thanks to Ilija Martinoski's victory over the Sooners' Mihov. Martinoski won in straight sets — 6-4, 7-6 — to close the scoring on the night.

Roddick improved to 4-0 against the Cowboys in his two seasons as head coach. Before Roddick's arrival, OU had lost to OSU for 15 consecutive seasons.

"I know that we've had our struggles before against them, but we haven't had it in the last two years," Roddick said.

Reigning All-American Paval was also aware of the Sooners' past struggles against the Cowboys and said being able to beat the Cowboys twice in one season meant a lot.

"It's awesome. To beat them four times in the last two seasons is good for us, good for our team, good for our coaches. Especially after losing for so many years," Paval said.
