If you are struggling with your shopping list, remember, music is the gift that keeps on giving. November is a gold mine for the biggest of the big music releases each year, and 2010 is no exception.
With so many CDs to choose from, it can be a little overwhelming. Here’s a guide to what each of your friends will want to unwrap and unwind to.
For your hipster pal:
November and December are usually death zones for indie music, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few PBR-friendly albums coming out.
Daft Punk
“Tron: Legacy OST”
Released: Nov. 22
Daft Punk and “Tron” is a match made in heaven. Surely, the band’s outfits were inspired by the original 1982 epic and to have them write the score to the follow-up feels like things have come full circle.
Nicki Minaj
“Pink Friday”
Released: Nov. 22
She’s like Missy Elliott, only more frightening. The Queens, N.Y., rapper’s debut effort features collaborations with the likes of Lil’ Wayne, Kanye West and will.i.am.
For those with OD’ing on holiday cheer:
OK, so this person likes Christmas, a lot. So what if he/she listens Josh Groban’s “Noel” year-round? Lots of people do it, right? It is the most wonderful time, of the year, so why ever let the music stop?
Mariah Carey
“Merry Christmas II You”
Released: Nov. 2
Carey’s 1994 “Merry Christmas” is one of the holy grails of holiday albums. She’s still got the voice, so her second effort should be just as strong.
Jackie Evancho
“O Holy Night”
Released: Nov. 16
What’s better than Christmas music? Why Christmas music sung by 10-year-old soprano prodigies who wowed Howie Mandel, Sharon Osbourne and millions of TV viewers on “America’s Got Talent,” of course. These ain’t your neighborhood kiddie carolers.
For the radio junkie:
There’s (usually) nothing wrong with Top 40 tunes, and this season has a good share of big pop releases.
Rihanna
“Loud”
Released: Nov. 16
Rihanna has publicly said “Loud” will be a return to her reggae-inspired dance jams of her earliest work from the eerie, harsh and dark music of last year’s “Rated R.” Its lead single, “Only Girl In the World,” is already burning up the Billboard chart.
Ne-Yo
“Libra Scale”
Released: Nov. 22
Ne-Yo is the anti-Chris Brown, a smooth gentleman who cares less about fame and more about putting out stellar R&B albums. His last, “Year of the Gentleman,” went on to win Grammys, and “Libra Scale” could very well do the same.
For a bro:
Dude, like, it’s a total bummer that there isn’t a new Dave Matthews album coming out, but there’s got to be something for your favorite bro out there.
Dane Cook
“I Did My Best”
Released: Nov. 22
It’s the comedy greatest hits album only bros are asking for.
Kid Rock
“Born Free”
Released: Nov. 15
Which musician managed to get Martina McBride and T.I. on the same track? This guy. Admittedly, that’s pretty awesome.
For music lovers:
These are safe bets. If the friend/family member you are shopping for likes music, they should like these, and if they don’t like music, they don’t deserve the joy of receiving a gift anyway now do they?
Kanye West
“My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”
Released: Nov. 22
Say what you will about Mr. West, he knows how to make damn good music. From banging singles to the soulful ballads, ‘Ye never lets the listener down when it comes down to the record.
Jay-Z
“The Hits Collection Volume 1”
Released: Nov. 22
Usually, greatest hits albums are lame (see above), but Jay-Z is the exception to the rule. He’s the reigning king of hip-hop and has more than enough material to fill a greatest hits encyclopedia.
Bruce Springsteen
“The Promise”
Released: Nov. 16
Springsteen is basically America, and you like America, don’t you?
“The Promise” is made up of extra material that didn’t make it on to “The Darkness on The Edge Of Town,” but even Springsteen’s leftovers are rock ‘n’ roll gems.
