The No. 15 OU baseball team’s first trip to Texas this season was a successful one as the Sooners defeated the Dallas Baptist Patriots 8-4 in Dallas.
OU (12-1) extended its winning streak to seven games behind the arm of senior pitcher J.R. Robinson and an early lead that proved to be too much for the Patriots to come back on.
Robinson pitched 7 1/3 innings while allowing three runs on five hits and striking out eight batters. The victory was Robinson’s first in three tries, and was the first time this season he lasted into the seventh inning. He also lowered his ERA to 5.40.
Robinson had the support of his offense in the first three innings. The Sooners scored six runs during that time, which was more than enough for Robinson to feel comfortable on the mound.
OU strung together 13 hits on the evening, which was six more than the Patriots.
Dallas Baptist made a run at mounting a comeback by keeping the Sooners off the scoreboard for four innings while it scored two runs between the fourth and sixth innings. The two teams exchanged two runs apiece in the eighth inning, and the Patriots threatened in the ninth inning, which caused head coach Sunny Golloway to bring in junior pitcher Ryan Duke with one out left in the game.
Duke recorded the final out, and because the tying run was in the on-deck circle he was credited with his sixth save of the season and his 22nd of his career.
The Sooners were led by sophomore center fielder Chris Ellison and sophomore third baseman Garrett Buechele at the plate, who both had two hits and brought in two runs.
Ellison finished the game 2-3 with two RBIs, and Buechele went 2-5 with two RBIs and a home run. The home run was Buechele’s fifth of the season, surpassing his season total from a year ago.
The Sooners will turn right back around from Dallas and will play at 3 p.m. today in Norman against the Houston Baptist Huskies. OU defeated the Huskies at L. Dale Mitchell Park twice last year by a combined score of 16-1.
