OU athletes competed in the USA Track and Field Championships this past weekend as Sooner track stars made a splash at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
One of the competitors was sophomore Mookie Salaam, who competed in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 20.52, his fastest time of the season.
Sophomore Brittany Borman competed in the women’s discus and registered a throw of 164-8 to claim 10th place. Borman also competed in the women’s javelin, taking seventh with a mark of 170-1 (51.85). Senior teammate Amy Backel finished just ahead of Borman in sixth place with a throw of 174-1.
Junior Ronnie Ash took third in the men’s 110-meter hurdles in a time of 13.69.
Redshirt freshman Tia Brooks took fourth in the women’s shot put with 57-0.00.
Big 12 Freshman of the Year Karen Shump took 11th in the same event, finishing the competition with 54-4.00 mark.
In the men’s triple jump competition, junior Neelon Greenwood took 15th place with 51-0.25.
Junior Eric Bailey finished 12th in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with 51.02 after posting a 51.13 qualifying time in the opening heat.
In the women’s 400-meter dash, freshman Claire McConnell took 24th in the junior heptathlon. In the two-day event, McConnell accumulated 4,257 points and capped off the competition with a seventh-place finish in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:26.16.
Alumni Leslie Cole, Toni Smith and Kevin Bookout competed in the shot put, triple jump, and 200/400 meter dash.
Cook took 14th in the 400 with a time of 3.86, advancing to the next round with a time of 53.77. Cole also took 12th place in the women’s 200- meter dash with 23.89.
Bookout took 10th in the men’s shot put with a throw of 63-0.25 (19.21).
Smith took third in the women’s triple jump. Smith ended her OU career in 2008 as the record holder in the triple jump, took bronze with 44-11 (13.69).
The Sooners ended a great season at the USA championship. In total, the Sooners had 20 NCAA championship qualifiers, where five were presented with All-American honors during the meet. The women finished ninth and the men finished tied for 27th, while Texas A&M won both the men’s and women’s crown for the second-straight year.
