The OU women’s golf team is set to host the Big 12 Championship tournament this weekend at the Jimmie Austin Golf Club.
The team is excited to host the championship, said head coach Veronique Drouin.
“It's also great to be playing this championship on a golf course that we play almost every day,” Drouin said.
This marks the first time since 1998 that the Big 12 Championship for women’s golf will be played at the golf course.
The 18-hole course is 6,327-yards with a par of 72. The league’s teams will play a total of 54 holes over the course of the weekend, each team playing 18 holes a day.
Drouin said Rodney Young, Jimmie Austin golf director, and his staff have done a fantastic job preparing the course for championship play.
The women’s golf team has been preparing for this tournament all year, Drouin said, and playing on the home course for the Sooners will have its advantages.
She said over the course of the preparation week, the team has been playing the course more and reading the greens to ensure they have a feel for the course heading into the weekend.
“The girls have been working really hard, and I hope it pays off for them this week,” Drouin said. “I believe we've had some great practices out here and we are ready to get this tournament started.”
The lineup for the Sooners will look like this through the weekend, as substitutions are not allowed:
• Leading the way for the Sooners is junior Ellen Mueller, who is ranked No. 62 nationally by Golfweek.
• Behind Mueller is freshman Taylor Schmidt, coming off her first career top-10 finish last week at the Baylor Spring Invitational.
• Next is senior Andrea Sellmeyer, carding three top-20 performances on the year.
• Rounding out OU’s lineup is senior Chelsey Collins and her sister, sophomore Brooke Collins.
The Sooners enter the tournament as the 10th-seeded team in the Big 12 and will look to set the pace paired with Kansas and Kansas State, No. 11 and 12 seeds respectively.
The threesome will tee off at 8 a.m. today on hole No. 1. OU’s group will be followed by No. 7-seed Nebraska, No. 8 Missouri and No. 9 Colorado teeing off at 8:50 a.m.
Starting on the back nine, teeing off at 8 a.m. is No. 4 seed Baylor, No. 5 Texas Tech and No. 6 Iowa State. Behind them at 8:50 a.m. is No. 1 seed Texas A&M, No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 3 Texas.
Drouin said if the team plays smart golf and the individual players play their own game, the women’s golf team has a shot of bringing home the Big 12 Championship.
“The girls are hungry to win,” Drouin said.
Fans are invited to watch the team and follow the action at Jimmie Austin Golf Club this weekend for free.
