Bag of Tricks
by   |  November 16, 2005  |

Quy Nguyen is a magician. As a marketing and management senior, he juggles, entertains and serves his audience. Yet he's not the typical pull-a-rabbit-out-of-his-hat type of guy; he's even better.

How he juggles: Quy immersed himself in activities and organizations around campus his sophomore year. In no time, Quy became the chair of several Campus Activity Council events.

Even with a full plate, Quy learned how to balance his time between school, work and friends.

"It's hard at first," Quy says. "But I sat down with my mentor, Scott Dawkins, and we broke down my hours. How many hours to sleep, how many hours to eat and I just followed that schedule. Sometimes you get rid of your social life, like dating or other stuff, but you get so much more out of it. In some ways, you get another social life in the process."

While being involved can be strenuous, Quy says it is an amazing and rewarding experience that all students should participate in.

"I tell everyone to get involved because I want them to have the same experiences I have," Quy says. "Hopefully people will see that my being involved has helped me out a lot and that will make them want to get involved as well."

Juggling activities would be exhausting for most people, but Quy manages to make time for his friends and remain positive in stressful situations.

"When you need Quy to listen, he does," says mathematics senior Brett Miller who is Quy's best friend and roommate. "He makes you the only thing he is focusing on, even when he may have a million other things going on."

How he entertains: While he claims to not possess any specific "talent," Quy has a natural gift of building relationships with people and making them feel at ease.

"[Quy] is a thoughtful and loving son to his parents. He is truly devoted to the people he cares for, but rarely does he ask the same in return," said Quy's older brother Son Nguyen. "Everyone that knows Quy probably thinks he wears his emotions on his sleeves because he has a friendly, talkative and outgoing demeanor. But as his brother, I know that Quy is more introspective and reserved than the person he appears to be at OU. He is always thinking of ways to improve his whole self and strengthen the relationships in his life."

While his involvement in various campus organizations says a lot about him, Quy's favorite past times also reflect his authorative personality. One of his favorite TV shows, The West Wing, mirrors a leadership model he admires.

"I love the dynamic of The West Wing," Quy says. "I love how the president on the show can walk into a room and calm everything. I love that type of leadership, [where] people want to follow you because they want to be like you. That's something I want to strive for, to have that type of leadership where people will want to model themselves after."

How he serves: One of Quy's most important talents is helping people fit in, whether in an organization or in college. His love for serving others goes beyond the ordinary. In many cases, he strives to remind each individual how much they are appreciated.

"I love making people feel really special," Quy says. "I love making a personalized note or getting someone candy, I think that's what I excel at because I like to make sure people are taken care of."

Miller confirms Quy's generosity for others.

"Some people may not see it [as] being a big deal, but it really makes people feel special to be wished a happy birthday," said Miller. "Quy is good at keeping track of people's birthdays, and making sure they get a visit or a phone call.

"Also, Quy, being the generous person that he is, often likes to pay for people's meals, movie tickets, etcetera. Somehow, he is always able to thwart any attempt at repaying him; it's like a sixth sense of his."

Relating to his peers is something Quy hopes to incorporate in a future career. Even his imaginary careers focus on serving others.

"Sometimes I think it would be really cool to be a concierge or hotel manager," Quy says. "I could make sure that everyone's needs were met. It didn't matter if you were a rock star or a regular guest, I would do whatever I could do to make you happy and make sure your stay was comfortable."

After his leadership experiences at the University of Oklahoma, Quy hopes to continue his involvement with a university, whether it be OU or another college.

"I'd like to work in student affairs for a living because I think that it's just an amazing job and you get to work with amazing, fun people who are always energetic and always in really good moods," Quy says.

Quy's ultimate goal in college is to earn a degree and graduate. In the process he has touched many lives through his dedication and hard work in clubs, organizations and programs around OU.

Just a few weeks before competing in the Mr. & Ms. Asian OU pageant, Quy learned various magic tricks for his talent category. In three short tricks, Quy not only won the hearts of the judges and the audience, but also the title, Mr. Asian OU. Quy may not know a lot about real magic, but his connection with others is magical.

"To be honest, my magic wasn't so great," said Nguyen about his performance at the pageant. "It was my interaction with the audience -- that was my magic."
