Local musicians combine unique sounds
by   |  November 9, 2005  |

Local singer/songwriters Ryan Lindsey and Brine Webb will perform two musically unique sets tonight at Pepe Delegado's, 752 Asp Ave.

Although the two musicians are also roommates, they follow individual music ventures.

Lindsey, a member of local alt-country troupe Cheyenne, currently performs solo and has recently begun to play piano for the Starlight Mints. Along with solo live performances and recording with the Starlight Mints, Lindsey said he is working on a solo album with producer Chad Copelin.

Since Lindsey has been booking more solo shows, he has been working more with a blues pedal to add dynamic to the live experience.

"It's kind of part of the fun. Every live show is challenging," Lindsey said. "I could easily mess up, and I have to be on top of things."

Lindsey said his pedal work compensates for the absence of a back-up band, allowing him to create live tracks that layer guitar, piano and vocals. In general, Lindsey said his music is light in nature, while Webb's music is usually heavier.

Webb, who has also had success and separations with bands, said though the two don't collaborate, living with another musician inspires.

"Ryan Lindsey makes me want to play music more," Webb said.

Comparatively, Lindsey is more pop-oriented, Webb said, while his music carries a weighted amount of sincere lyrics and expression.

Drawing from social and relational experiences, Webb said his music inspects darker emotions of unreciprocated relationships.

"I thought for awhile that it was too dark, too down, but after close examination, there seemed to be a running theme in my music," Webb said. "A kind of hopeless optimism both in the lyrics and the compositions of the songs."

Webb will open at 10 p.m., and Lindsey will follow.
