USC dominates Sooners
by   |  January 5, 2005  |

It looked like OU would be the team to post 55 points. It looked like Jason White would be the quarterback to throw for 300 yards and five touchdowns.

But a disasterous first half for OU reversed the roles.

USC quarterback Matt Leinart threw for 332 yards and an Orange Bowl record five touchdowns to lead USC to a 55-19 win over the Sooners. The Trojans captured their second straight national title.

"I'm disappointed, embarrassed, you name it," White said. "I think the whole team wouls say the same thing.

USC led 38-10 at halftime after four OU turnovers led to 24 Trojan points.

The first turnover was a play that defied belief. Wide receiver Mark Bradley tried to make a play on a punt USC was about to down inside the OU 10-yard line. Bradley fumbled and USC recovered. The Trojans scored to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

"I don't know why Mark would have done that," head coach Bob Stoops said. "It's as bad a play as there is."

Before Bradley's play, the Sooners were confident as White was having success through the air. USC was stopping the Sooners' rushing game, but White was able to connect with his receivers early.

However, it was the turnovers and mistakes that buried OU.

Freshman running back Adrian Peterson was held to 85 yards on 25 carries by USC.

"Really it wasn't just their front four," Stoops said. "They had more than one guy getting to the football."

For Stoops and White, the Orange Bowl debacle marks a second straight loss in the BCS national championship game. The Sooners lost to LSU 21-14 in last season's Sugar Bowl. White's college career is over and so, too might be Leinart's.

While the USC quarterback said it would take a lot for him not to come back from his senior season, the Heisman Trophy winner did not rule out a jump to the NFL.

If he does come back, he will not be in the same situation as White was this season. Leinart has a national championship under his belt. In fact, now he has two.
