UCLA defeats OU 9-1
by   |  June 9, 2004  |

The UCLA Bruins defeated the Sooners 9-1 in the opening game of
the NCAA Regional on Friday at SBC Bricktown Ballpark.

UCLA starter Casey Jansen pitched eight shutout innings,
striking out seven on two hits and only walking one batter. Jansen
is the first Bruin pitcher to win 10 games in four years.

Oklahoma’s troubles started because they simply
couldn’t generate enough offense to put runs across the
board.

“It’s frustrating, but they’re not trying to
do that on purpose. We struggled offensively. You have your bad
nights and you have your good nights,” said senior pitcher
Mark Roberts.

A runner did not get past first base until the ninth inning when
junior first baseman Ole Sheldon walked and went to second on
junior designated hitter Eric Thornton’s single and later
scored on a freshman catcher Josh Stinson single.

Overall, OU left eight runs on base. Bruin first baseman Wes
Whisler went 2-4, with a homer and scored three runs.

Roberts (9-5) was charged with the loss after he was tagged for
seven runs on seven hits, matching a career high with 12 strikeouts
in 7 1/3 innings in earning his first loss since April 29 when he
lost to Oklahoma State.

Already leading 2-0, UCLA broke the game open in the sixth, when
McMillan walked, and Whisler homered to right extending the lead to
4-0.

UCLA scored another five runs in the eighth to put the game out
of reach.

The Bruins sent nine runners to the plate in that inning.

Griffin drove McCarthy home with a second on the next pitch. A
wild pitch by reliever Daniel McCutheon scored Whisler, and Thayer
singled home Griffin.

Susdorf ended the scoring with a two-run double.

OU head coach Larry Cochell said he was disappointed but
believes his team came come back and win.

“That was probably one of the most disappointing losses
I’ve had in a long time,” he said. “The momentum
chanced on the home run ball after we were already down two to
nothing.”

The loss puts the Sooners in the losers bracket where they must
face Central Connecticut State, a 12-1 loser to top-seeded
Florida.
