Any well-bred Sooner fan knows about Sooner Magic. Born during a game against Nebraska on a cold day in 1976, the ever-familiar term has its roots in football. The general conception of Sooner Magic has to do with our sports teams winning against all odds.
Perhaps Sooner Magic has taken on a different meaning these days.
After our football team lost the chance at an eighth national championship, there was no denying that the entire university faced feelings of disappointment. Yet, at the end of the day, the Pride stood together, raised their fingers towards the sky, and sang the Chant.
If you listen carefully to Boomer Sooner or to the OU Chant, the words seemingly fail to mention anything about sports. This may be for the better.
"O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A, our chant rolls on an on. Thousand strong join heart and song in alma mater's praise. Of campus beautiful by day and night, of colors proudly gleaming red and white. 'Neath the western sky, OU's chant will never die. Live on university."
Win or lose, we are still Sooners born and bred. Behind our sports teams lies a university full of interesting and exciting people. OU welcomes you with open arms and makes you feel at home.
Maybe Sooner Magic is making life-long friends, or graduating even after six majors and six years. Maybe it is making the grades, or having brothers or sisters though a greek organization.
When people who do not know what Sooner Magic is ask about our university, our eyes should twinkle a little at the knowledge that we have a special place. Whatever it is that makes that place special, that is the magic you should speak of to others.
So, whatever Sooner Magic is, it is more than merely sports. Sooner Magic is in all of us.
