Heisman finalists to be announced
by   |  December 8, 2004  |

Today at 5 p.m., Heisman finalists will be announced.

Saturday at 7 p.m., the ceremony to announce the winner will begin.

OU senior quarterback Jason White and freshman running back Adrian Peterson are two of the top college football players in the running for the prestigious award.

White and Peterson are listed as No. 1 and No. 2 respectively on ESPN.com, where they have both stayed around the top of competition all season.

White has his own hardware since he won the award last year before the Sooners went on to the Sugar Bowl and lost the BCS Championship game to LSU.

This year, the OU duo has put up impressive numbers on the OU offense and carried the Sooners to a 12-0 record and a Big 12 Championship.

Next up is the BCS Championship game at the Orange Bowl in Miami against Southern Cal.

White and Peterson are among elite company in their Heisman campaign, including USC quarterback Matt Leinart, USC running back Reggie Bush, Utah quarterback Alex Smith and Texas running back Cedric Benson.

But neither White nor Peterson is crazy about talking about the possibility of bring another Heisman to Norman.

"Heisman is great, and it's a fun opportunity," White said. "Words can't speak how much fun it is and just to be around the greats that are there, but right now I'm enjoying the victories from this season."

White is 231-of-354 passing for 2,961 yards on the season. He has 33 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Peterson, a strong contender for the award, would be the first freshman to ever earn the Heisman Trophy if he wins.

Peterson has 314 carries for 1,843 yards this season for an average of 5.8 yards per carry. He also has 15 touchdowns.

"I have never seen a guy that big, that strong, that fast," Colorado's Terrence Wheatley said about Peterson after Saturday's Big 12 Championship game. "He's a playmaker. He's one of the best I've seen."

Other Heisman contenders have posted big numbers and helped their teams to strong records and bowl games.

Leinart is 251-of-377 passing for 2,990 yards with 28 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also has three rushing touchdowns and his teammate Bush has 137 carries for 833 yards and six touchdowns, 41 catches for 478 yards and seven touchdowns. He also has a passing touchdown and two punts returned for touchdowns.

USC will play OU Jan. 4 for the BCS title.

Smith is 185-of-280 with 2,624 yards, 28 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also has 120 carries for 563 yards and 10 touchdowns. Undefeated Utah will play Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl Jan. 3.
