Good ringtone sites hard to find
by   |  August 24, 2004  |

Looking for ringtones can be a tiresome and frustrating
experience for some and searching for a good Web site is hard to
do.

The Internet offers more than 1 million ringtone Web sites that
claim to be free, but this gimmick shouldn’t fool students.
Many of them are used for United Kingdom phones and can’t be
transferred to the United States because of the difference in phone
number codes. Other Web sites offer “free” ringtones at
a small cost. So where can you get good ringtones that don’t
give you false advertising?

“I played around on the Internet and searched Google for
free polyphonic ringtone downloads,” said Erin Bucher,
Oklahoma City Community College forensic science sophomore.
“I ran into a lot of Web sites that falsely advertised free
ringtones, but after searching around I found a few good
ones.”

Bucher suggested trying a few Web sites such as
www.polyphonicringtonez.com and www.matrixm.com.

“[MatrixM] has a pretty good variety and depending on the
download it’s either cheap or free,” said Bucher.
“The other site is easier to use and what’s cool about
it is you can browse on your phone or your computer because
it’s a WAP site.”

A WAP, or Wireless Application Protocol, site can be accessed on
a cell phone or a computer, and Norman Cellular employee Dave
Lawton said that most newer cell phones include the new Global
System for Mobile Communications, or GSM, which allows owners to
access WAP sites on their phone.

Many students who were asked where to get ringtones also said
www.3gupload.com was a great place to find good, low-cost
ringtones.

“I use www.3gupload.com a lot,” said Chris Evans,
undeclared Rose State College sophomore. “You pay a one-time
fee and then you can get as many ringtones as you want.”

When searching through the Web site, many obscure songs can be
found along with the more popular ones. This Web site offers
ringtones for most phones and wireless companies. Once a student is
registered, the Web site will text message the student their own
personal locker to save and upload ringtones.

A good place to get ringtones for Sprint and AT&T phones is
www.3gforfree.com, and the best part about it is that it is free.
They offer hundreds of different ringtones from hip-hop to classic
rock to modern rock.

Another option is to go to the wireless company that the student
uses.

Lawton said he always tells his Cingular customers to go through
the company’s Web site at www.cingular.com.

The ringtones or other downloads are also conveniently credited
directly to the students’ account.

Unique and individual cell phone rings are becoming a must in
the cellular world, but users may have to pay a small fee to keep
their individuality.
