Big Red Rally starts home season
by   |  September 6, 2002  |

"Tonight will be the ultimate in spirit competitions," said Callie Gresham, broadcasting freshman. This OU enthusiast is looking forward to her first school pep rally.

"This is an awesome time to get excited about OU football and I know there are going to be lots of people there who show true OU spirit."

The annual CAC Big Red Rally celebration takes place at 6 tonight on Owen Field. Each year, before the first home football game, the university unites to rally support for the Sooners.

With thousands of OU fans packed into the stands of Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, CAC chairman Ben Appleby will see the results of his year long efforts. The management/legal studies senior has spent countless hours to make this night successful.

On the schedule for tonight's rally is the Pride of Oklahoma marching band, the OU spirit squad, President Boren, Coach Bob Stoops, the OU football team and the 2001 rally radio DJs, T.J. and Tooker.

Other university athletes and avid OU supporters will make appearances to give fans more to cheer about. The reigning National Champion men's gymnastic team will be showing off their prestigious trophy.

Another in attendance will be the oldest men's pep organization, the OU RUF/NEKS. Since 1923, at their first official appearance as RUF/NEKS, these Friday night pep rally lovers have been getting rowdy at the event. Though the Rally has outgrown the auditorium status it held when the RUF/NEKS began, major spirit competition's will take place outdoors and rock the Norman evening.

C. Don Bradley, advisor to Big Red Rally said he feels there is a bigger picture to the annual rally than just cheering.

"It is so important in the first two weeks of school that students are introduced to what is special about our university community. Howdy Week and Big Red Rally serve that purpose.

And for students who come into a new community, finding their niche can be difficult at times, this week shows that we are excited that they are here."
