Loved ones mourned the loss of Scott Voise at an informal memorial service Friday at Weitzenhoffer Theatre. About 130 people, including professors, administrators, college and hometown friends gathered their remembrances of Voise with poems and songs.
Voise, 21, died of an accidental drowning after a fall resulting in a head injury. His body was found late Wednesday night in a farm pond located four and one-half miles south of Perry.
Voise had been missing since Monday. An under-sheriff spotted the body after learning that the pond was Voise's favorite fishing spot.
Voise, drama junior, had been a high-profile actor, both at OU and in the state.
"Scott was an excellent actor and a talented young man," said Sharla Cowden, audience development coordinator at the school of drama. "He was a vital component of the theater program."
Voise's University Theater stage credits included Billy Flint in Chicago; Governor in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Moonface in Anything Goes and Jack in Dancing at Lughnasa.
Professor Susan Shaughnessy, who taught Voise for two years, directed Dancing At Lughnasa. She said Voise amazed everyone and had acted with humanity and compassion in the role of Jack.
"Scott was a fine actor," she said.
Voise also appeared recently as Lyndon B. Johnson and an ensemble member in the world premiere of Jack.
His SummerWind performances included: St. Peter in Why the
Lord Came to Sand Mountain; Horatio in 15-minute Hamlet; Bob in Revenge of the Space Pandas and Woody Man in Trial of the Big Bad Wolf.
Voise was a Barnett Scholarship recipient and was also awarded an Ida Z. Kirk Acting Award from the school of drama for his role of Billy Flynn in this season's musical production of Chicago. He was also a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
"He is well loved by the entire school," said Dr. Esequiel Meza, assistant dean at Fine Arts school. "He'll be missed, his unique contribution that he made as a student. We have a lot of good memories of Scott."
In addition to his parents, Voise is survived by two sisters, grandparents and a paternal great-grandmother.
